Professor Song CEN was born in Beijing on August 14th , 1972, and is native of Fujian Province, China. He received his Ph.D. from Department of Civil Engineering, Tsinghua University in 2000, after which he entered Department of Engineering Mechanics, Tsinghua University, to pursue an academic career. He has successively held the positions of Post-doctor Research Fellow (2000-2002), Lecturer (2002-2003), Associate Professor (2003-2010), and full Professor (2010-). From 2012, he also served as a Professor in Office of Scientific Research & Development, Tsinghua University. And In 2015, he was promoted to the Deputy Director, Office of Scientific Research & Development, Tsinghua University.

Computational Mechanics in Science and Engineering, including: numerical computation and simulation for large-scale structural engineering, theories and techniques for high-performance finite element models, nonlinear finite element method, stochastic finite element method, and other new numerical arithmetic, etc.

Currently, Professor Cen’s research group is mainly interested in 1) high-performance computational theories, techniques and models for various structural analyses, including Shape-free Finite Element Method, New Natural Coordinate Methods for Finite Element Method, Hamilton Solution System and related Hybrid Element Method, Stochastic Finite Element Method, Meshless or Meshfree Method, Generalized Conforming Element Method, etc. and 2) effective numerical simulations and computations of scientific and large-scale engineering problems, including Multi-scale problems, Structural Analyses of High-rise Building, Nuclear Reactor, Diesel Engine, Air-plane, etc.

Academic Achievement

Professor CEN has made great efforts on solving bottleneck problems existing in computational solid mechanics for twenty years, and obtained a series of original achievements on new finite element methods. (1) He proposed a concept of “Shape-free finite element method”, and is developing new finite element methods whose performances are nearly independent of the mesh quality. (2) He founded a series of New Natural Coordinate Methods, which provide effective tools to solve the sensitivity problem to mesh distortion, a challenging problem in finite element methods. (3) He successfully solved some remarkable inherent difficulties of the traditional finite element methods, such as the well-known limitation defined by MacNeal’s theorem, the edge effect and shear locking problems of Mindlin-Reissner plates, the accuracy loss problem of stress solutions by displacement-based elements, etc., and developed a series of outstanding high-performance elements and algorithms with high practical values. Some finite element models have been incorporated into some domestic mainstream finite element analysis programs for civil and structural engineering, and are widely applied in the field of structural designs in China. To date, in the areas of computational mechanics and finite element method, he has compiled three Special Issues in the Journal indexed by SCI-EXPANDED (as leading Guest Editor), published two English monographs, six Chinese books and 161 papers, in which 58 papers from the Journals indexed by SCI-EXPANDED (including 10 papers in Int. J. Numer. Meth. Engng., and 7 papers in Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg.), 97 papers from the Journals indexed by Ei Compendex. And his sum of the Time Cited without self-citations is 2570, including more than 560 times from the articles indexed by Web of Science TM Core Collection.
