Institutes of Biomechanics and Medical Engineering

As one of the earliest and famous research institutions on biomechanics and medical engineering in China, the Biomechanics Laboratory of Tsinghua University was founded in 1979. On its basis, the Institute of Biomechanics and Medical Engineering (IBME) was established in January 2006. It is a multidisciplinary research unit dedicated to research in the frontiers of biomechanics, mechanobiology, bionics, and medical engineering.
IBME is currently one of the major centers for biomechanics and medical engineering in China, with the goal of encouraging both fundamental researches and medical applications. It has 12 faculty members including 4 full professors (X.Q. Feng, Q.S. Zheng, Y.J. Yin, and Y.P. Cao) and 8 associate professors. They are all doctorates and have international experiences in research via abroad study and work. The main research directions of IBME include:
    A. Mechanics and bionics of biological materials;
    B. Molecular, cellular, and tissue mechanobiology;
    C. Biomechanics of fluids (e.g., blood rheology);
    D. Mechanics of soft matter;
    E. Development of advanced medical devices, instruments, and medicines.
IBME has been funded by both governmental funding agencies (e.g., National Natural Science Foundation of China, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology) and domestic/abroad companies. It has published several hundred papers in national and international journals, e.g., Nature Materials, PNAS, J. Mech. Phys. Solids, J. Biomech., and Biophys. J., and has received a number of academic awards.
It is striving to become an international center in both scientific discovery and technology innovation in biological and medical engineering.
